The manaia is made from genuine New Zealand greenstone, or pounamu in Maori. Greenstone is a beautiful type of nephrite jade found on the west coast of the South Island of New Zealand.
The manaia measures approximately 10.4cm (4 1/8') x 5cm (2') x 0.9cm (3/8'). It hangs from a long plaited black cord with adjustable knots, so you can have it sitting just right on your chest.
The beautifully carved breastplate features two manaia, the Maori symbol of guardianship. Manaia preside over land, sea and sky, acting as guardians, warding off intruders and protecting against evil. Manaia have bird-like heads, representing the sky, and this one has stylised fish scales, representing the sea.
