Ruru are a small dark brown native owl with a beige and brown mottled front, and the typically large owl eyes.  They are nocturnal, eating a variety of insects, small animals like rats and mice, and smaller birds.  They are mainly found in forested areas, but equally are often heard around residential areas.  Their main call sounds like 'morepork'.
